New Anas Exposé: Doctor ‘rapes’ 52 women while performing abortions

Yes, you read right.

I first came across this story on the the myjoyonline news site and to say I was shocked is an understatement. The entire story stinks from  beginning to end. The doctor (who is now in Police custody) worked at a clinic in Tema (apparently, the name of the clinic begins with a ‘U’… anyone have a clue which clinic this is??) and would routinely perform abortions for women. As part of the procedure, he’d claim that it wouldn’t work unless they had an erect penis inside them (…. this is as stupid as the legendary, “Just the tip” excuse) and would proceed to have sex with them (unprotected, I might add).

Ghana’s only investigative journalist, Anas (how in the world did he hear about this!!??) placed hidden cameras in the surgery under the guise of a cleaner and medical assistant… (which journalist do you know could work as a medical assistant!? Again, does *anyone* know the name of this so-called clinic!?). Needless to say, Anas filmed the doctor having sex with 52 different women – some who are supposed to be known socialites (now I’m curious!)

And do you want to know why I’m curious? I’m curious to know which woman would believe a doctor that told her the only way to successfully get rid of the unwanted result of unprotected sex was to perform an abortion (which we know works) and have unprotected sex with him. I just find the whole thing mind blowing. 52 women!

I’m just shocked. I won’t even go into how disturbed I feel that Anas filmed these women without their consent, while they were undergoing (what is often) a very traumatic experience (How dare he?). In fact, I would like to know why he’s not being called to account for that. Fair enough the doctor duped the women, but that does NOT give Anas the right to film (not one, but fifty-two) women having an abortion and being abused.

I find it disturbing that the article on myjoyonline.com implies that the journalists there have seen this video and are calling it a “must-watch” video. I am absolutely horrified.

What are your thoughts?

Should think investigative jouralism has it’s down sides. This being one of them. It’s just a case of uncontrolled variables coming to play. Should think the identities of the ladies would be well protected. They have no case unless any of their faces were exposed. No one would admit havng an abortion let alone give consent to be filmed or be a part of a sting operation to apprehend Dr wHO. Just goes to show the filth in our society. Apprently not everyone who’s got a good command of english or has 3rdtier educaton or is seen on tv is an intellectual or “educated”

I agree with you. There are definitely some ‘down sides’ to investigative journalism. It’s worrying that the invasion of women’s privacy is one of them. In order to protect society, the law must uphold some values and ethics. The filming of not one, not two or three (in fact, one case should would have been enough) but 52 instances of the crime is outrageous.

A twitter follower went on to comment that Anas is as culpable as the Doctor for continuing to film the doctor perform the procedures and rape the women. At what point do we hold Anas accountable for seeking sensationalism?

      • Atooks says:

Your point wellnoted and agreed. He probably wanted to send him off for good. Building a strong case maybe? Like the DEA in the states would wait for years to compile solid evidence when working priority cases.Could be any of that. Doesn’t justify the need to have waited so long.I totally agree.Question is had thisguy been arrested after the 10th victim.Who’s to say these girls wouldn’t go somewhere else. Its the mind sect of some of our women about that irks me.

  2. Hi Crystal,

I checked the link you provided and it confirms one of my initial thoughts when I read the post:

“He told the unsuspecting women, midway into the abortion, that unless an erected penis entered them, the exercise would be unsuccessful so they had no choice but to let him enter”

I don’t think the women believed that the abortion wouldn’t be successful if this man did not rape them. I think they were desperate, as women who choose to have abortions often are. Their desperation meant they were not going to tell the Dr to f*ck off but would just want to get the whole operation over. In my mind this is another reason why abortions should be legalised with no restrictions (beyond the obvious ones such as no abortions after 3 months unless the mother’s life is at risk etc). The fact that abortions are in this gray area (abortions are legal when the mother could suffer psychological harm from carrying the child to term) where many people assume its illegal means that women tend to go to ‘backstreet’ doctors who take advantage of their vulnerability.

    • dust says:

That’s a good point. After a chat with a doctor friend, I’ve been told that if you go for an abortion, the doctor usually gives the woman a power sedative because the procedure is a painful one. If this is the case, its also likely that these women were not in their right state of mind and the doctor took advantage.

Just shady. Still wondering which clinic in Tema has a name that starts with ‘U’….

Stinks of urban legend to me. Where’s the hard evidence?

    • GhanaDude says:

It *does* have the urban legend stink, but I believe it *did* happen. There’s a video which according to this article (http://www.multitvworld.com/news/en/component/content/article/14-program-previews/11430-wild-ghana-the-story-of-52-women-raped-by-one-doctor-right-on-the-abortion-table.html) was aired on MultiTV last night.

I wonder why he looked on for 52 women to be raped and didn’t make the swoop after (at most) the first two? How do we even know this was his (the doctor’s) lean season? O_o

      • dust says:

Just read the write-up on the page you linked us to.. Again, this is just shocking. Not saying the doctor was right (because he deserves the heavy fist of the law to pound down on him, multiple times), but it was wrong for Anas to place hidden cameras in a surgery without the consent of the numerous women (those that had abortions and those that did not) that were treated there.

Imagine the number of women that 1) just went for a procedure -there’s footage of them and 2) the women that had abortions, but didn’t have sex with the doctor – there’s footage of them too.

Isn’t this against the law? Are there any lawyers that can speak on this?

  4. Declan says:

Very sad, ugly story. Are the women so dumb as not to know what’s right or wrong? Can’t they differentiate what’s true and untrue? They aint kids. Shame on them and the doctor; the women. Why must they have unprotected sex; get pregnant and attempt to remove life which they have no right to? Guess they all enjoyed it. I will not argue if this is a case of rape or sex by consent. I trust the Ghana cops to unravel this and punish those who deserve it. Pure discredit to the medical profession but shit does happens. They should all be punished; not only the GP but the women too. This is nonsense please!!

    • dust says:

Hi Declan! Thank you for your comment. We encourage everyone to express their views. Why do you think the women need to be punished? I think we are all assuming that the women got pregnant by cases of consensual intercourse. What about those cases, where the women were raped and became pregnant? Not saying every single woman was in that situation, but perhaps we should not judge the women so quickly.

Also, after consulting with an actual doctor, apparently women that are going to have an abortion are given a powerful sedative because the procedure is very painful (in an abortion, what is done is the doctor scraps the lining of the womb – ouch!). Even thinking about it makes me cringe. So we cannot even begin to assume that they were in control of all their faculties to make a rational decision.

The whole thing is just sad on so many levels.
